Clients frequently ask "how often should my cat's nails be trimmed?" or other 'timing' questions. Here is a brief FAQ...
HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CAT(S)?
...have a bath?
Washing a cat too often is not healthy. Cats are desert creatures so they developed a natural oil which keeps their skin from getting dry and creating dander. Stripping away this oil causes cats to generate more dander, and thus more allergens for humans (did you know most people are allergic to cat dander, not fur?). Cats should only be washed when they actually get dirty (as when rolling in or getting into something) or when they are too old or ill to properly care for themselves.
...nails be trimmed?
For the average cat, every 6 to 8 weeks. But some cats' nails grow faster than others. If you feel nails digging into you when your kitty wants to cuddle, it's time to have them trimmed!
...be shaved?
For cats that need Kitty Brazilians or Lion Cuts, we recommend a regular shave every 3-4 months. However, we advise against keeping most cats in a Lion Cut during winter, since cats can easily develop pneumonia in colder weather.
